Integrating Access and Excel for Processing Large Volumes of Data

These days it is not uncommon for even small businesses to have to manage sizeable quantities of data. As businesses grow complexity is likely to increase, as well as the amount of information to be processed. A good data model will certainly speed things up.

Some businesses have significantly large volumes of data to process. Programmed correctly, the tools available on your desktop are surprisingly all you need to achieve this, as the power of desktop computers have increased exponentially over recent years.

Spreadsheet applications such as Excel provide excellent analytical tools for routine and ad-hoc analysis, and can indeed store and compute large amounts of data.

However, spreadsheets have their limitations. Analysis is far more meaningful when results can be compared with other information. Yet it is hard to maintain the relational aspect of information when it is stored in spreadsheets.

Accuracy is essential if meaningful conclusions are to be drawn or decisions made. Since it is harder to validate spreadsheet data the accuracy and integrity cannot be guaranteed.

The most efficient solution is to use a relational database such as Access to record and store information. Bulk data manipulation can be handled within this software, without the need to resort to expensive data warehousing applications. Where required simple import/export facilities will make it easy for ad hoc processing using spreadsheet tools.
